Conserving energy at home is easier than it seems and it starts with one or two small changes that you may not even notice at first. If you’re looking to become a bit greener, here are some suggestions for easy ways to begin:
Unplug: All of your appliances, from your toaster to the TV, suck electricity even when they’re not on. Unplug the nonessentials when you go out for the day or the weekend but leave the important stuff like your ADT Security System on and ready. You’ll save money on your electricity bills, too.
Collect Rainwater: A rain barrel is one of the simplest ways to give back to the environment and it’s eco-friendly, too! Rain water is actually better for your plants than tap water due to less contaminants – leave it out back near the garden.
Plant a Garden: Speaking of gardening, planting a small vegetable garden is a great way to give back. You’ll eat healthier and your food won’t have to travel thousands of miles to get to you which is always good for the environment.

Though many don’t know it, there are many ways a person can save money and energy by doing simple home improvements. The easiest and most common home improvement one can make is purchasing energy efficient light bulbs and replacing all old bulbs in the home. Savings can add up to be around 4.50 per year, per light bulb. These light bulbs can save 75 more energy and can last more than five times longer than a regular light bulb. These cost around 6.00 each and can be found at most department and hardware stores.Get more information here. http://frugaldad.com/2011/09/06/light-bulb-dilemma-incandescent-cfl-led/ Another way to save energy and money by managing your thermostat correctly. Most people don’t know that if you replace your air and furnace filters as needed it can actually save energy. It is also recommended that you turn down your heat 3 degrees during the winter, and turn your air up 3 degrees during the summer. This can save a household up to 10 off of their heating and cooling bill. Another way to save energy is to only use your dishwasher when it is completely full of dishes. Turn off any lights and electronics that aren’t being used. Always shut down your computer when you are finished.

In some areas today, monthly energy bills have already surpassed monthly mortgage and rent costs. We can win the battle against our ever rising energy bills with more concentrated conservation efforts, and further application of renewable energies, such as solar, wind, hydro, biomass, and biofuels.

Our monthly energy bills include the cost of electricity, gas, water, and fuels. We can save money on energy inside our homes, outdoors, and in our vehicles as well. Most of us are already applying common energy conservation, such as raising and lowering thermostats according to the seasons, and turning off lights when not in use.

You can save even more money by establishing the following habits..

Use CFL light bulbs
Unplug small electrical gadgets, appliances, and computers when not in use
Draw shades down during summer, up during winter
Use fans instead of air conditioning
Use solar products whenever possible
Set hot water heater at 120
Close vents and shut doors to unused rooms
Replace furnace filters regularly
Reduce outdoor watering
Cut back on number, and length of showers
Only full loads in dishwasher and washing machines
Use aerating, low-flow faucets and shower heads

Challenge family members to think of more ways to save energy, and then apply them!

There are lots of different ways that you can find out about energy conservation in the area that you live in. Many cities have groups that are dedicated to spreading the word about what we can do in our homes to be able to conserve energy and make our world a better place to live in. These groups also have larger community projects that help the entire community conserve energy in different ways. They even hold workshops about how you can help spread the word to others and let them know the little things that you can do in order to help out the cause.

One of the best ways that you can find out about energy conservation in your area is to do a simple internet search for energy conservation in the city you live in. This will turn out a lot of results that you can use to find the people and places that can help you make a good start on giving back to the earth. After you have done your internet search you can meet up with people in your neighborhood who are already conserving energy in their own home and find out ways you can help.

Solar panels harness solar cells from the sun and convert the light into electric energy. While there are many pros and cons of these panels, the question is: Are solar panels worth installing?
There are several benefits to the installation of solar panels, including saving money on your energy bills. Solar panels produce the electricity that runs through your home; therefore, your utility bills will cost next to nothing. As of now, the government has found no way to be able to charge or tax the use of sunlight for energy.
By using solar panels you could also earn tax cuts and energy credits. Because solar panels are a source of renewable energy, the U.S. government offers up to 2,000 of tax cuts each year for homes with solar panels. Energy credits are also given to homes that use less energy than the panels produce.
Pollution, including carbon dioxide, mercury, and nitrogen oxide, is greatly reduced by using solar panels because they don’t burn fuel; therefore, no emissions are released into the environment.
The main negative to solar panels is the cost of purchasing and installing them. An estimated cost of 30,000 – 40,000 is the upfront cost of solar panels to a single family home. Generally, it takes a large number of panels to produce enough energy to satisfy the home’s daily energy usage.
Solar panels can only be used during the day, while the sun is shining. At night, you can only use the energy that was stored during the day.
